What is the Custom Spell Creator?

The Spell Creator is a free homebrew spell builder for D&D 5e. Design a spell the way the official books do it: pick a level from cantrip to 9th, choose a school of magic, set casting time, range, components, and duration, then define what the spell actually does with damage dice, saving throws, attack rolls, areas of effect, and higher-level scaling. The result is a clean, table-ready spell you can drop straight into your campaign.

Built to work with your whole toolkit

• Monster Creator integration: every custom spell you build appears alongside the SRD spells in the Monster Creator's spell picker, so your homebrew lich can cast your homebrew spells.
• Cloud saves: sign in to keep your spellbook synced across devices. Without an account, spells are stored locally in your browser.
• Community Gallery: publish a finished spell to the gallery for other Dungeon Masters to discover, rate, and remix.
• Icons and art: give each spell an icon, uploaded or AI-generated with your own API key through the Codex assistant.

How to create a spell

1. Click New Spell and name your creation.
2. Set the basics: level, school, casting time, range, components, and duration.
3. Add mechanics: damage rolls, save or attack type, area of effect, conditions, and effects.
4. Describe what it looks like at the table, and how it scales at higher levels.
5. Save it. It's now in your spellbook and available in the Monster Creator.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Spell Creator free?

Yes. Building spells is completely free, and you don't need an account to start. Signing in adds cloud saves and gallery publishing.

Can my monsters cast the spells I create?

Yes. Custom spells appear in the Monster Creator's spellcasting picker next to the SRD list, so any creature you build can learn them.

Can I share spells with other players?

Yes. Submit a spell to the Community Gallery and, once approved by moderation, anyone can view, rate, and remix it with credit to you.
